Synopsis
Jan Němec's debut feature film, Diamonds of the Night, is an intense drama that recounts the escape of two young Jewish men from a deportation train, capturing in real time their extreme fatigue, hunger, and profound anxiety. Through subjective narration, the story interweaves the brutal realism of their physical and mental exhaustion with dream sequences and retrospective hallucinations. Adapted from Arnošt Lustig's short story, Darkness Has No Shadow, this 1964 film is a powerful tribute to the writer, himself a Holocaust survivor and a direct collaborator on this major cinematic work.
